Emergent Reading

This in-person course is designed for students who are at the beginning level of reading and speaking American English.  Meeting 3 times a week, each 60-minute session will address components of literacy instruction:  phonemic awareness, phonics, sight words, word-analysis, and comprehension.  Fast paced and multi-sensory, the lessons build a firm foundation in reading over the course of 14 weeks, giving the student the tools they need to become a beginning reader. The age requirement is 5 years-old and older.

Beginning Reading

During the in-person Beginning Reader course, the student dives deeper into the understanding of phonics and the morphology of words, such various vowel patterns and affixes.  Students learn how to decode multisyllabic words and, in turn, use this same understanding to spell (encode) unfamiliar words and create meaningful written responses to a text. The age requirement is 6 years-old and older.

In this course the student will begin to read independently with texts at their ability level.  Over the course of 14 weeks, the student’s reading ability progresses as they master a higher level of phonics, vocabulary, and morphology.

Three reading assessments are given during the course: pre, mid-term, and post. The pre assessment will be used to develop a lesson plan that fits the student’s individual literacy needs.  Personalized literacy goals are then set for the student,  These goals are aligned with the State of Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards for Reading.  Another assessment is given mid-term to monitor the student’s progress and adjust instruction as needed. At the end of the semester, a  final post assessment is given to determine if the student has met their literacy goals.  All three of these documents can be used in a homeschool portfolio.

In addition to the 1 to 1 instruction with teacher and student, weekly home activities are provided for families to support their student’s newly acquired reading skill.

Reading to Learn

When a student has a firm foundations of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, literacy skills, and comprehension, they are now ready to use reading to benefit their lives, either academically or for personal enjoyment.  The in-person Reading to Learn course brings a student closer to the craft of writing through reading: exploring word analysis, discovering points of view, and identifying an author’s purpose. The age requirement is 7 years-old and up.

Using both literary and informational texts, the student explores the why’s and how’s of reading and writing, developing the understanding that one is just the inverse of the other.
